What Social Factors Will Make a Difference

May 19, 2009 Kirby Rooks

Grants solve social issues through the intelligent use of social factors. When social problems are overcome society benefits. This is the idea underlying all grant awards

The grant proposal is made up of different elements when requesting grant funding. This article will address one of the most important elements- The Statement of Social Issue.

Why Do Grants Make a Difference on Correcting Social Issues

Funders have underlying reasons for giving grants to nonprofit organizations. They usually have set initiatives that are based on Donor or Board of Directors leadership in carrying out their goals. These initiatives or goals can have a positive impact on societies and communities. Funders are determined to correct certain broad social issues.

What Are Social Factors and How Does the Nonprofit Form Strategic Plans

These social factors are projects or plans that nonprofits have found to be successful in the community. It is important for the grant writer to point out the gap in services, the social problem it creates, and how the organization intends to apply certain social factors to that gap in services. It is also helpful to the funder to know the current resources that address this social problem if any and why these resources have not been effective.

Social Problems Can Be Overcome and Society Benefits

Nonprofits must point out the social problem to the funder and what will happen if it is not corrected. Focus on the benefits the organization will make to the community. Then explain the social factors that are incorporated into the program or project being proposed. This is shown with statistics and experience in handling these particular social problems. Showing accountability by reporting the facts is important. It shows the urgency in correcting the social problem. Then restate the future of the social problem and its eventual eradication. Help the funder see the significance in the program being proposed.

How the Social Issues Being Addressed Meets the Funder’s Initiative

The emphasis with the funder is on the nonprofits strategic and tactical plans. That shows the funder how they will meet their initiatives or goals through the vision that the nonprofit has for its total mission to address the social issues at hand.

When the funder’s website or written material is researched the nonprofit should list buzzwords that the funder uses in the explanation of their initiatives. Then use the same words to describe the social issues that the program or project corrects in order to meet those initiatives. This furthers the successful attainment of the goals and helps them visualize how a program fits into their plans.

Nonprofits need help to address social issues and problems. They depend on a social society to address manpower and volunteer resources. Grant funding helps to raise the necessary funds to build capacity to overcome social gaps in service but they need the public support that only comes with community service.
